There was a time that I would do any job - small or big - to my car. As a student I pretty much had to. I had a rotten (in all senses of the word) Vauxhall Viva:

that developed a fault almost every day and I had to get it fixed by the following day or I couldn't get to Uni (and do it on a student's budget). It didn't matter what it was or if I had the skills, I'd learn as I went and eventually I got to the point where I was able to completely strip my Mk1 Capri:

down to individual nuts and bolts, restore/replace everything and build it all back up again (it even worked!).

However, nowadays, I look much more closely at the trade off between cost and my time (and how much I want to do the job). So I get a lot more work done for me these days than I used to and particularly if it's something that can benefit from the finish an experienced professional can bring to the job (like paintwork related stuff).

My GF's C3 has 2 scratches on one door from a trolley used in car parks, she will not let me get it repaired. So l put a stickers over them, she went ballistic, she said everybody was laughing at her, l just said she has no sense of humour.
They looked like plasters you put on cuts on your body, l thought they were great. After 2 weeks she started to pick em off with her finger nails. I shouted no, out came the hair dryer soapy water and they were gone. The scratches are back. Sad
