Checked and cleaned earth strap. New battery went flat yesterday.

I've tested the voltage and now 12.7v at battery after charge, but only 12.6v with the engine running. So I'm guessing this points towards the alternator?

Ok I've got the front bumper off, and cleaned the two bolts and wire up that go to the altenator.

I get 14.2volt at the altenator if I take the positive from the large wire/bolt and put the earth on the belt adjuster/tension bracket. If I try and get a earth from any other part of the body work, I only get 12.5volts!

Where should I be getting the earth for the altenator? Is the altenator not earth to the car properly?

Ok sorted it.

Earth lead from battery to engine re-made up and all clean connection points etc. but still no alternator volts at the battery! So in the end I have had to make a earth lead from the alternator to the body of car. All seems good now, 14.2volt at the battery when engine is idle.

I appreciate this is quite an old thread but my wife's Toyota Aygo is showing the same fault and there doesn't seem to be a lot of information elsewhere on the web about it.

Symptoms are exactly the same: flickering P/S, ABS, and handbrake lights, speedo needle bounding about even when stationary.

I've checked and cleaned the earth straps from the battery negative to the engine and body, and tried it with another battery. I'm down now to the alternator.

One of you mentioned running an earth lead from the alternator to the body. Can you tell me where on the alternator you connected it to, please?

Thanks
Gary

Just thinking out loud here - but what are the earthing arrangements for the engine block itself? Is there an earthing strap or similar to "bond" the engine electrically to the vehicle chassis? As the engine sits on rubber mountings, it would effectively be insulated?

There is an earthing strap from the battery negative terminal to the engine block.

Thanks. Re-reading the posts above I can see it mentioned enough times!

Clean and replace cabling seems the first port of call for these issues.
