Have read a few posts about this and thought I'd share my experience.
All the gears were fairly awkward to engage, particularly second and particularly until the car had warmed up. My local mechanic checked the clutch and gear shift cables, but couldn't find a fault. He agreed that it was stiff and recommended a gearbox specialist. After some discussion, the very knowledgable and helpful specialist suggested I have the gearbox oil changed for Dexron 2 ATF. Just picked it up this afternoon, what a difference! Much easier to engage all gears. Hope this helps someone else.

Hhhhmmm, the worry is the Dexron is an ATF and not intended to continously handle the high pressures between the meshing cogs. That said, it's not the first time I've heard of similar tricks across the years.

Yep, the wrong oil for the job.

I think the clutch is not adjusted correctly.

A high end GL4/5 oil would've been a better idea.

Sometimes I can't get reverse unless I pump the clutch a couple of times then it goes in fine. Only happens on cold starts though.

I did ask about longevity. He said he's seen the same problem with that gearbox (and others) for a few years and that it's something he has done (with other boxes) for many years without any problem. There was no way I could live with the gear change as it was (in fact, with a long commute in and out of London, I was developing tendonitis), so I was very happy to follow his advice!

Car has done a little under 50k. Clutch is adjusted correctly and it's not dragging.

You have done well for 50k, most likely its the clutch or linkages...

I'd agree Centy - the symptom has been addressed, rather than the underlying illness.

I've been reading up on this, yet it works as a 'cure', but isn't fixing the real problem, and is not good in the long term for the box, sort the clutch/clutch adjustment out to do the real fix.

It's had a new clutch already.
Citroen dealer looked at it and couldn't find a prob outside the box.
If it's in the box, guess I'll find out in time.
