Cable stretched...the gear linkage cable has two cables, 1 cable does push pull for 1st - 4th gears and the second does reverse and 5th gear only. As 1st gear is all the way to the rear on the gear box selector this is the one that stretches the cable...hence intermittent 1st. You can easily check by manual movement of the gear selector on the gearbox, it will move by hand. Either disconnect the cable from the sector or get a mate to move the gear stick and push the selector the rest of the way home all the way to the rear to confirm.

its a known problem with these cars. First gear syncro is week - Toyota small car gearboxes are crap.

I can get over this problem if tackling uphill starts by switching off, engaging 1st and then restarting engine with clutch
engaged. Try that otherwise its a new gearbox as a rebuild will cost more. I am on my 3rd gearbox after 126,000 miles.

Gear linkage cable stretched.... 1st is all the way back on the single shiftier on the gearbox...2/3 are middle and 4th all the way forward...reverse and 5th use the second cable to move the secondary selector. So as first involves pulling the cable taught to select the gear the cable stretches. To Test Just un hook the cable at the gearbox with a willing partner pressing the clutch in you are move the selector all the way to the rear on the gear box..if it moves fairly easily you have you problem... the cable will not pull enough to engage first. Otherwise its change the gearboox oil.
