Unfortunately you wont polish these sorts of marks out. The paint and the plastic bumper dont flex in the same way, hence you get cracks in the paint when its deformed beyond its flexibility. You have to add plasticers to the paint used on plastic panels to increase the flexibility. You also have to use an adhesion promoter to in effect stick the paint to the plastic. (Different plastics have different needs). Then each layer, Primer base coat clear etc will have their own additives to make them work . Painting plastic bumpers properly can be horribly expensive. Hence the dont worry about it approach, you are sure to do it again. (or someone else will do it for you)

Just checked the price of a new painted left rear wing for my Smart from the main dealer and its £ 89.25 inc GST. I enquired about the labour costs to fit it and they want £ 124.74 inc GST so £ 213.99 inc GST in total for the part fitted.

I was estimated about £ 175 to have it re-sprayed by a mobile body shop. Probably not going to get it done am just seeing what my options are, its only paint damage after all no indentations.

I'll contact a few other places to see what they say just to get an idea of the costs.

Hi man you got me there. Never heard of a mobile body shop for spraying cars. I reckon the paint is going to go everywhere, it needs to be done under controlled conditions.
When l had my Red C1 bumpers resprayed in a local body shop. It cost 150€ mind you that was a cash deal. And l got the dash bits done as well. Easy 250 with a receipt.
It's what l would call a 6 foot respray it looks good from 6 foot away the nearer you get well the worse it looks, a bit crazed.

It might be worth waiting until you're ready to exchange your car and get it done just before that.
Who knows what might happen in the meantime.

Well if they do a free inspection you got nix to lose. I'm still not convinced. See my edited post about waiting.

The paint damage doesn't look so bad from a few feet away either...

Removing the rear panels is way above my head...

Why not get a quote from your local ChipsAway franchisee? I've been very pleased with the work their franchisee in Southampton did on both my Audi RS4 (after someone keyed it down the nearside) and my C1 (right rear bumper after it got scraped on a wall by SWMBO). He erected a gazebo on my drive and had all the necessary gear in his van, the cost was very reasonable...

Well I've sent out a number of emails this afternoon to body shops to obtain prices to fit a new left rear wing bought from the main dealer like this...

Image

I've had 4 replies so far ranging from "around" £ 47.25 including 5% GST to £ 108.15 including 5% GST. One estimate of "around" £ 47.25 including 5% GST and two estimates of £ 52.50 including 5% GST, the other was £ 108.15 including 5% GST.

I doubt I am going to receive any more estimates significantly lower than £ 47.25 including 5% GST. Now its just a question of whether its worth doing, its going to cost me £ 89.25 including 5% GST for the new left rear wing itself so I am looking at about £ 140 in total to have a new one fitted.

Is the damage really that bad? I am wondering. The going rate seems to be around £ 50 for fitting and I've had that from a few garages so no rush to do anything hasty.

I am now going in a different direction, I been estimated £ 115 including GST to have my rear left wing repainted.

It was going to cost me £ 141.75 including GST to have a new left rear wing fitted. £ 89.25 including GST for a new rear wing from main dealer and £ 52.50 including GST to have it fitted by a body shop.

Its only minor paint damage so am still weighing up the pros and cons of having it seen to

Live with it! It is always a pain when it happens but you get used to it.
