I found this full synth 10w40, but got so confused with all of the different standards that I decided that I was better sticking with the Total Quartz - at least I can be sure that is okay

Okay, an update on the above:-

* Piston soak for a week with EPR BG109E - syringed in every couple of days
* Ran the EPR BG109E as an engine flush
* Drained and flushed out with Tesco 10w40 semi-synth A3/B4 (on sale at £4 for 4 litres - great for flushing)
* New filter and filled with Total Quartz 7000 10w40 semi-synth
* Replaced damaged crush washer on sump plug - responsible for oil leak?
* Added 200ml Archoil AR6400 P-Max injector cleaner to the tank and took it out for a thrash

Some oil used on the trash, but that was with 250 miles of getting its neck wrung, so not very realistic. Now topped up carefully to bang on max and will drive normally and monitor for the next 1,000 miles or so.

So, I'm a first time car owner. Just got a 58 plate C1 Code.

Unsure when the last oil and filter change was so considering getting it done. What oil brand & spec would the learned experts on here recommend?

You're probably best going for a 5w30 C3 fully synth in the first instance (recommended by the club) - something like Granville Hypalube Fully Synthetic 5w30 C3 Engine Oil. If you are uncertain of your service history then it might be worthwhile doing a gentle flush as well the first time around. Half a can of Wynns Engine Flush (or whatever you favour - just don't overdose it) used as per the instructions. I favour rinsing out the flushing oil with clean oil (fill up and idle for 15 minutes) and then swapping the filter and refilling as normal with clean oil - but that's up to you. Depending on your mileage, you may find that you burn some oil and that is nothing to get too concerned about. Mine is a little on the high side (1.3 litres per thousand miles) which is why I've swapped over to a 10w40 semi-synth. Hope that this helps and welcome :-)

If you decide to do the flushing business don't forget to change the oil filter after wards.

I would recommend you stick to 5w-30 as the club shop says give your car a complete service. Noting the
oil used as the mileage goes by. Keep a good service history for your car, when what was done etc.
