I got a good deal on the Bilstein shocks I bought. Cheapest place I could find in UK was Demon Tweeks...

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/shock-absorbers/car/smart/fortwo/2007/1-0-turbo/bilstein-b4-gas-shock-absorber-rear

Using a 10% discount code they wanted £ 50.31 ex VAT each and £ 8.91 for Parcelforce Euro Priority - 2 Working Days therefore £ 109.53 in total.

Someone on another forum put me onto https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bilstein/638683 who were having a 21% discount sale at the time of my order. I managed to get two Bilstein rear shock absorbers for £ 100.19 ex VAT delivered even cheaper than Demon Tweeks.

Only thing was I had to wait 1.5 weeks for delivery from Germany by DHL whereas the Demon Tweeks order would have arrived quicker but I wasnt in any rush.

Also I was quoted £ 107.10 ex VAT inc GST each from the main dealer for the official Smart ones but I believe they have Bilstein stamped into the metal so they are essentially the same thing.

Funny thing that, everyone thinks things are fast in Germany, not always the case.
When l go into McMacdonalds near me have to wait ages and then they they can’t understand my
London Dialekt.
And the the make of shocks Bilstein is where l live 5 minutes drive away. Providing there are no road works, like now.

Yeah Bilstein are top quality, had they been a cheaper alternative I am not sure they would be so keen to fit them. One garage even said the main dealer would use either Bilstein or Sach.

Bilstein rear shock absorbers for the Smart Fortwo are more expensive then the same ones for the C1 see here...

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/shock-absorbers/car/citroen/c1-05-14/2005/1-0/bilstein-b4-gas-shock-absorber-rear

Only £ 25.45 ex Vat plus delivery.

I've got a nasty suspicion that the main dealer are going to charge me something like £ 250 to fit the rear shocks when they estimated £ 99 + 5% GST.

I say this because when I asked how much major B servicing would cost they told me £ 265 + 5% GST. I went ahead with that thinking it was pretty reasonable and when it came down to it, it was actually £ 285 + 5% GST just for the labour and £ 107.28 inc GST for parts.

The only thing I can say is that they were under pressure to provide a cheap quote as I'd emailed 5 or 6 garages and copied them all in to recieve it so they were trying to save face.

This time I emailed them seperately, I did not actually get a major B service that time either that would have cost £ 547.05 inc GST and I only paid £ 406.53 inc GST.

That's about £ 111.40 according to xe.com, I paid £ 100.19 ex VAT inc post. It was a good deal. It's just a shame they are so much more expensive than C1 ones.

Well I have some very good news, the main dealer fitted my new rear shocks today and it came to £ 103.95 inc 5% GST just like their estimate. Was pleased with that and they collected and delivered my car back to me for free too.

They are 4.4 miles away so it wasn't really practical to drive there myself, the garage that I had my car serviced at wanted £ 118 and I would have driven it there and back myself as they are within walking distance.

The main dealer may be expensive for servicing but for parts and little jobs like this very reasonable. The lady from the main dealer rang me to say it was ready but she was waiting for the invoice and she'd call me back.

I thought oh oh it's going to be £ 350 or something so you cannot believe my surprise and joy when she said £ 99 + 5% GST. Really made up!

When I got my C1 windows tinted, I dropped the car off in one place but had to pick up my wife's car (which was also getting work done) elsewhere so I just walked the 12 miles from one to the other. It was a nice day and it was a country route so I thought "why not". The guy at the second garage couldn't believe it because he'd passed me on the road something like 3 hours earlier and could have given me a lift.

The furthest I have ever walked is about 13 miles from St Helier to Corbiere and back. Takes about 4 hours and I have sore feet afterwards. Not done that walk in 10 years now though.

Hill walking is one of my hobbies, so the 12 miles from garage to garage didn't particularly phase me. I knew that I was going to do it so I had decent boots on and a bite to eat in a back pack. It was a nice day out actually. :)
