Which tense would you use in these situations ?

1. It is morning, mum made breakfast for her son and left for work at 7 am. Then she calls her son at 8, wanting to know if he has eaten the sandwiches she fixed for him. Now, she says

Have you eaten the sandwiches? or Did you eat the sandwiches?

2. A work day has started, I’ve seen and said Hi to all the colleagues apart from Peter, so I’m looking for him, asking another colleague:

Have you seen Peter? Or Did you see Peter?

A little more on this one.

In your example, it would definintely be the first option. i.e. if you are looking for someone and trying to find out if anyone else has seen them recently, option 1 would be the normal way to ask.

However, option 2 could be used. e.g. if you saw Peter walking through the office while wearing or doing something weird, you might ask someone later on "did you see Peter?" I.E. you have seen Peter but you are asking if someone else saw the same weird occurrence.

e.g.
You: Did you see Peter?
Colleague: OMG yes, he was wearing pink spandex cycling shorts and clucking like a chicken in the office. Weird!

or

You: Did you see Peter?
Colleague: No, why?
You: He was wearing pink spandex cycling shorts in the and clucking like a chicken in the office. It was weird.

Of course, if Peter normally wears pink spandex and clucks like a chicken, the above would not be particularly unusual and perhaps not worth having this kind of conversation about.

Thanks guys for your input.

And what if I'm about to leave for work and I just can't find the car keys. What do I say to the missus?

Have you seen the car keys? or Did you see the car keys?

If you only have one car, then you would normally say, have you seen the car keys.

If you each have a car you would normally say, have you seen my car keys “sweet heart “
