Say there are a few pine trees on a beach. It is a scorching hot day. Some people are trying to cool down. So I need to say: "There are a few people sitting in the shade of pine trees.", right? What if I said "There are a few people sitting in the shadow of pine trees?" It changes the meaning or doesn't make any sense?

In that context I would always use shade, because you are trying to get 'shade from the sun' not 'shadow from the sun'.

I think it does not make any difference personality.

But really l reckon they should get in the water to cool down quicker.

Shade is probably a bit more correct, but I'm sure I could say or hear either one without really thinking them odd.

I would use shade and it sounds more natural

If it were shadow to be used then I think it would be said as "the shadows of the pine trees" the singular sounds unnatural where as the plural sounds much better

Say two women share their experience with their child labour, one of them says the midwife was unhelpful, etc. Then the other one wants to know in which hospital it took place and asks:

-Which hospital did you have the baby in?
-Which hospital did you give birth to the child in?
-Which hospital did the labour take place in?

Are those natural/correct?

I would say the first one definitely, probably not the second one and definitely not the third one (in my experience most women don't want to be reminded about labour but love talking about their baby/child).

-Which hospital did you have the baby in?
Sounds natural probably what I would use

-Which hospital did you give birth (to the child in)?
Yes but not often asked in this way really let part not really needed. As you already know the subject matter

-Which hospital did the labour take place in?
As grammatically correct as it is, it's a far too personal, or is it just us Brits with our stiff upper lip who don't talk about feelings
