I just got a dash cam for my 107 and I captured some footage of a 20 zone where every driver that came from behind me decided that the speed limit didn't apply to them.

I mean, I know this area well and I can understand why people may think it's a silly place for a 20 zone, because it's a wide road and there are only a small number of houses, few parked cars, pedestrians or other hazards, and it had been a 30 zone for many years previously. What's the logic in putting a 20 zone in an area with very few houses, on a pretty much straight road? Isn't it kind of futile to expect people to abide by it without some humps or cameras?

Personally I think they should do away with this 20 zone, or at least only have it in the section of road where the houses are.

Oops! I meant to keep it unlisted so it doesn't get mixed up with my video game development videos. Should be viewable now.

Humps and cameras only deter people driving their own cars or who care about their cars, stolen cars and people for whom their car is a disposable item ignore them. IMHO that means humps and cameras are futile as they don't deter those causing the greatest risk.

BTW there is some research that shows whilst the severity of accidents in 20 zones is lower the number of accidents is greater - because drivers spend more time watching their speedo and less time looking out the windscreen for hazards.

I drive through two 20 mph zones each week and make an effort to stay within these limits.

I approve of 20 mph zones in urban areas and stick to them, regardless. The way I see it, I have no access to accident statistics or fatalities recorded in that area - so am not in a position to judge how appropriate it is. We'll always have the kn0b$ who think that they know better - I had a cracker last week where I was waiting behind a stationery bus at a stop just before the start of the ziz-zags for a pedestrian crossing, There was no way you could get past the bus without approaching the crossing on the wrong side of the road with poor visibility. The answer is to wait for the bus to move off unless, as in this case, you're driving a Volvo 4x4 - middle aged bloke overtook me and the bus!

We also have lots in the towns and shopping area, with and without cameras. All fines have recently been increased. I pay close attention to my speed in these areas. They soon pass.

I feel the same. If the limit has been set to 20 in that zone, I assume that it has been done for good reasons (often a residential area with lots of kids etc). Therefore, if those reasons are good, me needing to be at my destination a minute or two sooner is probably not more important than whatever those reasons were.

We don't have many 20mph zones round our way, but nothing changes always drivers want go faster than you, what I learned over the years is nowadays I just let them speed on by cos usually I catch them up at the lights or some roadworks or even worse there is police or mobile camera waiting up the road in some sneeky blind spot, waiting to catch you, they got couple favourite places near me where stretch of road goes from fast flowing to a 30mph, by time you spotted them they gotcha!

Here’s one of mine...

The other one used to be a 30 mph zone but has changed since google captured their street view.
