Went out in my car this morning, google maps worked brilliantly. I'm going to leave the phone in the car permanently, I've tried to hide it from view as best I can, but I doubt any of my neighbours would break in to steal it and there is CCTV down there.

I've also switched it off so as not to use any battery power. It charges off the cars USB port when the engine is started.

Ordered a 256GB microSDXC card last week which arrived today. It was a bit of a gamble as the car itself only supports 32GB SDHC and the phone itself according to official specs 64GB. The key thing is that it supports SDXC which can go right up to 2TB.

So it’s pretty good can have music on whilst google mapping can’t see the track name and stuff like that but if you’re google mapping you want that full screen anyway.

So I think for £ 78.48 in total for the phone and 256GB microSDXC card I got a bargain, how much would an iPhone cost with that amount of storage.

Cheapest I can see is an iPhone 7 with 256GB for $221.

That’s about £ 172 squids, of course an iPhone isn’t an option for me as I already have one as my main phone but my head unit doesn’t support car play and mirrorlink and iPhone is a non starter.

I’ve done a bit of googling and have found a free music app called Pulsar on the google play store which allows you to playback music from your microSD card whilst running Android Auto.

Of course if you want google maps full screen then you’re not going to see the track names etc but it’s good if you want to listen to music from inside Android Auto and control playback functions on the head units screen rather than having to use the phone itself.

I’ve discovered that you can actually see the track name and artist whilst running googlemaps full screen as the Pulsar app displays them on screen at the start of every new track for 5 to 10 seconds.

This doesn’t fill the whole screen so you can easily still see googlemaps as well.

I've noticed a lot of these radio stations won't play outside the USA, I checked this by logging into one of my VPN servers based in the USA and it played fine when it didn't with my UK IP address.

Now I've just to work out how to setup VPN connections on my Android phone but at least I know its not the radio stations but my location.

Well I’ve been getting to grips with google maps under Android Auto. By default it’s orientated facing north but I wanted to see the direction I am going in. Turns out if you tap the screen twice it brings up a compass which you tap once to show the direction your going in rather than just facing north.

Second problem I had was when driving out of town I lost all maps, I parked up a number of times to try and get it going but eventually resigned myself to the fact that it wasn’t going to work.

Anyway on my way back into town I got the maps back again so I realized that I probably don’t have the offline map data setup properly.

It’s strange because I had the whole of Jersey selected to be available offline but that didn’t seem to be working. Anyway I’ve now got the whole of Guernsey and Jersey selected as an offline map and I’ll test this out at my soonest opportunity.

I’ve been trying to get Android Auto and google maps working as it was just showing a blank map.

So I’ve started the engine a number of times and just plugged my Samsung Galaxy S5 mini into the cars USB socket without loading anything on the phone and in fact booted the phone from a powered off state.

When switched on and plugged into the head unit it asked if I wanted to run screen mirroring after saying yes about 10 seconds or so later it displayed the map data from the phone.

I checked the phone and nothing was showing in the recently used apps list like it would if I had loaded android auto and google maps on the phone itself prior to connecting to the car.

I’ve switched the engine on twice and connected the phone without starting android auto or the maps and both times it loaded the map data several seconds after agreeing to go into screen mirroring mode.

Whilst in the car with the engine started I powered the phone off and on a number of times and every time it loaded the map data several seconds after agreeing to go into screen mirroring mode without loading any apps prior to this.

So the only thing I can think of is the latest google maps app I’ve installed has fixed the problem or I wasn’t doing something right.
