I agree it sounds like a ripoff, and l’m setting myself up for some s+++ here.
But the wages there are higher tax is different.
Having read the link that was posted l surprised with how much service costs varied across the country.
A/B/C service is all nonsense to me. That’s only for pleb’s in my opinion. I could not give a monkeys.
If you as a customer can make more money doing your job servicing your car, or you can’t service your car your self.
Then find a garage or person that can. Someone you can rely on and trust.
Someone who will not charge YOU £25 +VAT to check your fan belt.
By the way he may even help out on Saturday Afternoon or Sunday.
In Niel’s case he would due a discount because a service at home in underground garage must be a mechanics dream. With Coffee and cakes l reckon his next service would cost about £150inc max doing it my way.
And he can see what is going on all the time and learn free.

As I mentioned earlier the Mercedes independent charge £ 79 +5% GST per hour so 3 hours is £ 248.85 inc GST add on approx £ 100 for oils, filters etc and you get to £ 350.

Darn sarf, anywhere under about £70 an hour is 'cheap', although it isn't actually cheap, if you follow me. My local Vx garage is £114 + vat an hour, even Kia are over £100 an hour. If you look at the swish dealership buildings and massive tiled, well equipped workshop it's easy to see how they get to that kind of rate - that's a lot of facility to support, and the coffee isn't really 'free'. I read somewhere that the average UK labour rate in garages in 2015 was something like £80 + vat.

My job is fitting navigation and communication systems into light aircraft; our labour rate is £60 + vat and I get (occasional) comments about a high labour rate, by owners of private aircraft, as they swan off in their Bentleys, Range Rovers and S-Class Mercs...

My work buddy has a 2009 R-Class Merc, a local idie specialist charged him £800 to replace (all) the brakes, Merc's wanted 4 figures, plus vat. I had the clutch done in my C'eed a few weeks back, the gearbox needed to come out for an input shaft seal replacement too. Cost? £900. I don't have the time or the facilities to do it myself, so my hands are tied. That was a local garage too, gawd knows what Kia would have charged.

Unless you can do it yourself (and only a small percentage can), it's gonna be expensive.

Well I was right to think it could cost as much as £ 400. I asked for an estimate yesterday and they sent me this...

They are now charging £ 84 +5% GST per hour and if you take off the Pollen Filter which I never asked for its approximately £ 400.

Unbelievable amount of money. See they didn’t change the labour even though it meant they had less to do. £252

The main dealer charged me £ 404 for 3 hours work and parts in February 2016 and they didn't change the spark plugs or air filter which is where I assumed the extra hours labour comes from.

Ah well once the plugs are changed that should be it for the remainder of the time I own the car.
