A diesel engine would do very high MPG in this car.

They sold a diesel? C1 back in 2007 and don't think it sold that we'll

Along with the fact the government want to get away from diesels as it's 'so' bad for the environment

Suppose most manufacturers fit a diesel to reduce emissions, but the 1.0L is very low anyway now (95g/km) so was zero tax, even later 107/C1s/Aygos were 99g/km and as Reedy says original diesel sold in low numbers.

Also, it really a town/city car, and the way most town's/city's are going diesels are not exactly flavour of the month!

Personally, in such small cars diesels are bit waste of time, in a big car, van or truck where you need the extra grunt, they do the job intended!

It is also to do with what the EEC fines car manufacturers for exhaust emissions-No diesel in the range helps reduce this, and helps reduce their fines if they exceed it

It makes no real sense to fit an expensive Euro6b compliant de-pollution system (FAP + SCR or something for NOx) on a cheap car. The price would go up too much and it won't be competitive. And taking into account that the consumption is low anyway you won't make any economies while running it either.
For cars mostly driven in cities is even worse, if they only take short trips and the FAP regeneration is frequent they might end up consuming more than gasoline ones.
