Hi all,

My MOT is due mid October and it's my first one since owning the car. The previous MOT had an advisory that the front brake pad is worn but not excessively. The car did 2k miles with the previous owner since then and I've only done about 1.8k (thanks lockdown!) since it was purchased and inspected by the dealership and they told me there was a good amount of wear in them left. About a third of my driving has been on the motorway so will lessen the use of the brakes.

I'm taking it to an indie garage to get the brakes checked specifically to see if it will pass MOT and if I need them replacing. How much can I expect new brake pads to cost including labour? Will I need new discs, shoes etc? Basically I dont want to go and not get ripped off as clearly I dont know anything!

If the car has only done less than 4k miles since the MOT advisory it's unlikely new pads will be essential - indeed many garages (especially franchised dealers) seem to issue this advisory without good reason. For example, my Audi RS4 got this advisory 3 years in a row from a franchised dealer yet when I changed to a reputable independent they showed me that even after an additional 20k miles the pads were actually less than half worn.

Definitely advise you get a second opinion.

Pads are £15-20 from the club store, it takes 30 mins to fit them.

Pads is often used to drum up work, often they are nowhere near worn
