Whilst driving today and for the first time I noticed a horrible grinding noise when I pressed the brake down sometimes, so have emailed a local Mercedes independent garage to book it in for a service and inspection.

Quite common for brakes to grind when they have ran out of braking surface as an indicator that they are done for. Perhaps it's just that.

Yeah I hope they just need replacing and I can put it down to wear and tear. Not going to drive it again until I drive it the short distance to the garage for the service. You shouldn't mess around with the brakes it could be dangerous.

Sounds like you've had your moneys worth out of those brakes. Some brake pads have a little prong that rubs on the brake disc when the pads are worn down; it makes a noise rather than grinding. I don't suppose you'll have driven it many miles since this started though, so you might get away with just changing the pads.

Yeah brakes are a consumable part and don't last forever. I would rather it be the brakes that need replacing rather then something silly like a stone being stuck somewhere it shouldn't.

Had my car serviced today at a local Mercedes independent. It was a basic oil and filter change plus mandatory health, safety and maintenance checks. Therefore no brake bleeding or spark plug change.

It came to £ 137.52 and they said there was rust on the brakes which caused the grinding noise, apart from that they were ok.

I think I will be a return customer whilst not being the absolute cheapest I trust them to do a good job.

Seems like the brake noise and rust on the disks come from lack of use. Not a lot you can do about that mate, apart from brake more while you are driving.

My mr2 does that after I wash her

Because of the alloys the disks get covered in water which creates surface rust if I don't clean them straight away... Which I never do

Drive it and it cleans them off

Yeah it's thanks to advice on Internet forums that I managed to negotiate the £ 137.52 service deal. After finding out what costs the most in terms of labour charge is the brake bleeding and spark plug replacement.

Originally quoted £ 252.46 which included a brake fluid change but no spark plugs and had two hours labour charge which was knocked down to one hour minus the brake bleed.

Next year will probably have the spark plugs done but may skip the brake fluid change.

In your case l would forget the plugs, but the brake fluid is as you know very important
