I ain't a professional, as well as trying to diagnose sounds over recordings :p not sure how many joins there are in the exhaust from memory as one bit of pipe goes from the engine all the way to the rear as a single piece, I know that much.

A simple test I've seen is to briefly cover your hand over the exhaust pipe, which a technician did with my Aygo and God among men Ed China does to look for a blowing exhaust. I think it's testing to see if it builds up pressure.

Probably best to do it when the exhaust is cold to avoid burning your mitts. Do so at your own risk mate.

I will have a look tomorrow, looking at it from underneath doesnt reveal anything obvious, just a rusty old pipe.

Use a wet rag stuffed in the exhaust and you can then listen for any leaks

If it was me I would spend the 30 quid and get a new backbox

Turns out it needs a new rear box, kwik fit quoted me £227 for it to be done, i could probably do it myself, another issue now is that the clutch is slipping, gears are rather difficult to engage and setting off in slow moving traffic is becoming difficult as the revs only go up as i lift the pedal, it feels like the bite point has moved all the way down to the floor but the car doesnt go anywhere fast in 1st, took it to my mechanic and he comfirmed that it is indeed slipping, he tried to adjust it but it didnt help. He told me he would do the job for £170

It also feels like there is resistance against the gear lever when selecting a gear especially after a cold start and going into first at a stand still

Probably the most genius thing i have seen from a smart car.

I guess there might have been a smaller gap at the time they parked!
