I saw a review a few months back that said exactly that; good, but not as good as people say. They rated the Phillips ones (presumably the ones Reedy mentioned) better.

Those are weird looking bulbs, with that big cooling thing at the back.
Given that, these days, most headlamps focus their beam due almost entirely to the shape of the reflector rather than the front diffuser/headlamp "glass" (like headlamps used to) and that doing so if very dependent on the pattern of light emitted from the bulb, I'd be surprised if an LED replacement would work well/legally as the pattern of light from the bulb is likely to be very different. If the car was designed with LED bulbs in mind, that would be one thing but our bugs weren't. Be interesting to see how it works out, and get the verdict of an MOT tester too after he has checked the beam alignment.
